Ms. Wonson Goes to Kenya!

Thoughts on and photos from one teacher's adventures with Earthwatch.

Money, Money, Money!

I got my Kenyan shillings today! I took some pictures so that you could all see what the bills look like.

This first picture is of all the money I received, which is equal to $300.44. It is 17,350 KES.

This picture shows bills equal to about $5.

This picture shows bills equal to about $15.

These bills equal about $30.

These pictures show both sides of the KES 100 and KES 1000 bills.

I can't wait to see what I find to spend all this money on! Apparently, there are a few local crafts available to buy when we're in Wamba. Hopefully I'll be able to visit the big market in Nairobi as well and buy some souvenirs there, too. And, of course, there will be dinner at the Carnivore. Yum!

Is 17,350 KES a ton of money in Kenya?

Dinner at the Carnivore. Interesting name for a restaurant.

I'm going to Warp Tour in August with Kaitlin. We're so pysched for it!

Guess what
I got my boaters licence(or how ever you spell it.) I got a 94% on the test and now I can drive any motor boat(probly not a ferry)without an adult. When your in Kenya try to get a pic. of a hippo b/c I love hippos. All day long they sit, then eat, then sit again(by the way thats my goal in life.)

In response to Elizabeth's question about whether 17,350 KES is a lot of money in Kenya, I did a little research.

The average income in Kenya is less than $400, so I imagine that the $300 that I'm bringing is a lot of money to many Kenyans. Earthwatch recommended that we bring $50-$200 to spend at the research site, depending on how much we wanted to spend on souvenirs (there aren't a lot available). The minimum I could exchange was $300, so I just took that.

Lonely Planet's WorldGuide online has an index of typical prices, which should give you an idea of how expensive things are:

Item Price
car hire per day KSh 8,040.00
cheap African meal KSh 200.00
36-exposure roll of colour film KSh 350.00
cheap hostel room KSh 400.00

Average Room Prices
Low KSh300-700
Mid KSh700-2700
High KSh2700-32,000
Deluxe KSh32,000+

Average Meal Prices
Low KSh80-550
Mid KSh550-880
High KSh880-2400
